Once I have the basic idea and shapes to work with, I move to drawing the main lines of the character. Each line has a character of its own. I work on creating simple lines and curves which each vary in thickness. This adds weight to areas and begins to establish the shading.

Also, I don't always connect all the lines together. Your mind will automatically connect and fill in the missing pieces.
